Mentored by TAMS

What is Mentored by TAMS?

Mentored by TAMS is a 9-month mentorship programme (September - June) that aims to promote the professional and personal development of medical students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. By assigning students 1-1 to a mentor, the programme will enable students to formulate their goals and generate specific action points to bring these goals into a reality.

Research shows that medical students from under-represented backgrounds experience a lack of access to adequate mentoring when facing key career decisions, representing a major issue and challenge.

What does having a TAMS mentor provide?

  • Assist in the articulation of SMART goals

  • Formulating action points to achieve goals

  • Keeping the student accountable through regular meetings

How does this differ from an academic supervisor?

All medical schools are required to provide their students with an academic tutor at all stages of their clinical training. However, the relationship between you and your TAMS mentor is more informal. Traditionally, academic tutors simply need to ensure that the student has sufficient evidence to progress onto the next stage of training, while the role of your TAMS mentor is to offer advice and guidance that are specific to your interests and ambitions within but not limited to the standard curriculum.

What is expected of a TAMS Mentee?

As a mentee, you will be required to organise a meeting with your mentor at least every 2 months. A template will be provided for your first meeting and you are free to change it for subsequent meetings. All of this will be discussed between you and your mentor.
