NATHAN’S JOURNEY TO TAMS

What inspired you to establish TAMS?

TAMS started off with our Aspiring Medics Days. I got stuck in with these when we were first running them and got hooked! I just really enjoyed speaking with young people and aspiring medics and deeply felt TAMS was very much needed, as I hadn’t known about anything like it when I was applying to medical school!

What do you enjoy about studying Medicine at your university?

Back in 1st and 2nd year we had dissection sessions with cadavers to teach anatomy. At first this was really weird, but after a while I really enjoyed it and learnt loads. At the moment, I enjoy being on clinical placements and this is something they set up for us early on in medical school. We have placements in hospital and at GP surgeries in 4th year and I really enjoy speaking with patients!

If you could change one thing about your university, what would it be?

Hmm this is a difficult one… I would say that I would like to change the number of assessments as they like to set us a lot of assessments throughout the year compared to other medical schools it seems, but I guess it will prepare me well for life after medical school!

What are your interests outside of Medicine?

I really like reading, watching documentaries on Netflix, playing football, basketball, annoying my little sister and going for the occasional walk. I have also been watching more boxing in the past couple of years, so would like to try it out at some point.

What tip would you give to an aspiring medic in regard to selecting their university?

The advice I would give to aspiring medics in selecting medical schools is apply smart! Look at where you have the best chance of getting in based on your grades, UCAT and play it safe! Do your research and try to find information on the types of things that the medical schools you want to apply to are looking for!
