Shaharyar Sikander- Brighton and Sussex Medical School

Shaharyar Sikander is a TAMS Scholar and first year medical student at Brighton and Sussex Medical school. We caught up with him to hear some of his reflections on the programme thus far. Here’s what she had to say.

Hi Shaharyar, if you don’t mind sharing, why did you apply to the tams scholars programme?

‘The TAMS Scholars Programme provides a personal and professional development programme, and free access to medical education resources. This stood out to me as a great opportunity, as access to free resources would support and allow me to excel at my studies within medicine by helping me consolidate the knowledge I have and explore my interests further. In addition, the personal and professional development programme provides help within areas such as financial literacy and using our skills to create projects, which would be useful during the big transition to university and develop my skills as an aspiring doctor.’

If at all, how has the programme helped you so far?

‘So far, we have had multiple sessions focused on personal and professional development and been provided great resources. This has been very useful to me, as it has greatly helped me develop personally with managing my student and university life and professionally for medicine. Furthermore, the free resources have greatly assisted me during my studies in medicine from the big transition from A-level.’

Would you recommend the programme to incoming first years, if so who would you recommend the programme to?

‘I recommend this programme to any incoming first-year medical students, as their support for your medical studies and development is invaluable. I recommend it specially to anyone worried about managing themselves when moving to university, as the personal development sessions they provide can help, such as managing your finances.’

Shaharyar’s medical school are also very proud of his achievement on successfully acquiring a position on a national programme. Darren Beaney, Head of Admissions and Student Welfare at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) said:

“It is great to see the work of TAMS proving to be a success and even more satisfying to see a BSMS student benefitting from the support that the programme provides.”

The TAMS Scholars Programme team are so proud of Shaharyar and we are very excited to continue to support him in both his personal and professional development
