Deborah Adeyemi- Leeds School of Medicine
Deborah Adeyemi is a TAMS Scholar and first year medical student at the University of Leeds, School of Medicine. We caught up with her to hear some of her reflections on the programme thus far. Here’s what she had to say.
Hi Deborah, if you don’t mind sharing, why did you apply to the tams scholars programme?
‘One of the main reasons why I applied for the TAMS Scholar programme is because I quickly realised that although there is a lot of support available for prospective medical students, this support diminishes once these students start university. I understood that studying medicine was going to be a new and challenging experience, and I wanted support from experienced students and doctors who understood my background and the unique issues I may face at medical school; something that I knew TAMS could help with.’
If at all, how has the programme helped you so far?
‘Having a network of like-minded students from different universities, as well as older years and doctors who I can go to for continued support is very beneficial. I have also been able to access good quality revision materials for free and have even been given the opportunity to speak at a conference, all alongside gaining the necessary skills to become a successful medical student and doctor.’
Would you recommend the programme to incoming first years, if so who would you recommend the programme to?
‘I would definitely recommend this programme to incoming first year students who feel slightly overwhelmed about the journey through medical school, but also to those who know that they want to have an impactful medical school journey but want guidance of how to go about it.’
Deborah’s medical school are also very proud of her achievement on successfully acquiring a position on a national programme. Professor Louise Bryant (Professor of Psychological and Social Medicine and Co-Dean for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, University of Leeds) kindly shared with us that:
‘The University of Leeds School of Medicine were delighted to hear that The Aspiring Medics Support programme (TAMS) has been extended to students transitioning to University. We are very pleased that Deborah Adeyemi, one of our first-year students, is a participant on the TAMS Scholars programme and to hear she is benefitting from the resources and opportunities the programme provide. We hope that more of our students are able to join this programme in the future.’
The TAMS Scholars Programme team are so proud of Deborah and we are very excited to continue to support her in both her personal and professional development
